I've been having Ru Paul's Drag Drace withdrawals, and so when I saw that there was a LGBT night and drag show happening at Opus Underground in Salem, I decided to check it out! Before going Underground, Aisha and I got drinks and food at the bar upstairs. I'd never eaten at Opus before, and the falafel was falafabulous (sorry, I had to).
We weren't sure what to expect when we went downstairs. It was a chill atmosphere and a small crowd (granted, it was a Thursday night), and we got to claim the comfy couches. It's a cool space. My friend Rob and his fiancee joined us, and we marveled at what appeared to be an alarming number of hetero couples for a queer night (I shouldn't assume, but it seemed that we were the only 2 clearly non-hetero couples in the room).
The drag show started at around 9:45, and I appreciated the diversity of the 3 performances -- a drag queen performance of "Black Sheep" by Gin Wigmore, a drag king performance "I Wanna Be a Kennedy" by Kill Hannah, and a performance of "Girl Anachronism" by the Dresden Dolls. I forgot how much I love that song! And a challenging/impressive lipsync for sure.
After the 3 performances, the host said that they'd be back in 45 for the second-round late night show. That's usually the format of this event, I guess. Now I know. We didn't stick around, as I still had to drive back to Ipswich, we had work the next morning. Ah, Thursdays.
